Happy Spring! Welcome to our first blog post. Keep checking back every Wednesday for a new post on décor trends, specific event showcases, spotlights of our favorite venues and planners, and what’s new with us.
Here at Colonial Events our current obsession is unique wedding backdrops. Last season we began to play around with alternative arches and chuppahs, and this year we’re in full swing to create unique backdrops for our couples. Here are a few backdrops we’re gushing over.
1. copper arch + Greenery
This copper pipe arch was made by our very own Todd Hardiek last year for a A Moment In Time wedding and was used for the first time on the roof of the Detroit Opera House. We are so in love with the thing, that we’ve been playing around in our showroom with dressing it up. Here we’ve created an asymmetrical design using elements of multi-textured greenery, elegant sheer chiffon, and hanging glass terrariums.
2. MACRAME MINIMALISM
This season we’re dying to recreate the simplicity and elegance of this hanging macramé backdrop. This would be perfect for the couple looking to bring some calm and bohemia into their ceremony. Whether using a hand-made macramé backdrop or playing around with yarn and other strand material, we’re in love with the string trend. Don’t believe us? Take a look at our yarn backdrop that we created for our showroom.
3. FLORAL TEE-PEE CEREMONY ARCH
Using this traditional structure as your ceremony arch or as an alternative to a chuppah will bring true awe and splendor to your event. Use florals and greenery to add dimension and color. We loved the tee pee with canvas from last year’s A Moment in Time event, and we’re crushing on the idea of using the bones without the canvas for an entirely different look.
4. fREE-STANDING HONEYCOMB CEREMONY BACKDROP
We can’t get enough of geometric shapes for this wedding season. We’re seeing them on table settings, on invitations, and hanging over dance floors, but our favorite, by far, is this free-standing honeycomb backdrop. This structure uses hollow shapes to see through to the lush natural backdrop, but it would look ooey romantic in front of an exposed brick wall as well. We could even close off the back to make it solid for a pop of color. Saying your vows in front of this bad boy would surely convince your guests that you’re as cool as you always suspected.
5. RUSTIC FLOATING PALETTE BACKDROP
The rustic look is far from gone this wedding season and we’re not done playing around with different uses for pallets! This pallet backdrop with chiffon and floral garland perfectly framed the couple during their vows. The hanging of the backdrop, rather than being ground supported, added another intriguing element to the scene.
6. ROMANTIC, ART-INSPIRED BACKDROP
We’re genuinely inspired by this hanging backdrop that is more reminiscent of an art installation than a plain old wedding backdrop. These small pieces of different shapes and materials come together to form one beautiful framework for a truly charming ceremony.
7. SIMPLE WOODEN PEAK BACKDROP
In keeping with the geometric mood, this simple structure takes the idea of an arch and makes it more sleek and modern, while the ombre flowers soften the sharp angles. Consider using this for an outdoor wedding or on a rooftop overlooking Detroit city.
As you can see, the trends that we’re admiring are moving away from traditional fabric draped backdrops and headed toward the idea of creating a romantic, unfamiliar scene. When planning your ceremony, envision your space and consider how to create a setting that is expressive and personal to you.
